Carbon Fiber Trunks

Carbon fiber trunks make a great addition to a carbon fiber hood. Since most people do not paint their carbon fiber aero parts, they usually already have a carbon fiber hood exposed. Why not add to the existing carbon fiber by purchasing a carbon trunk, or in the case of hatchback, a carbon fiber hatch.

Not only are more equal weight savings achieved by also reducing weight in the rear of the vehicle, but the aesthetic appeal of a continuous flow of carbon fiber exposed on the top of the vehicle looks great. In the case of the MR2 you might also want to get a carbon fiber engine cover and inspection panels to complete the look. Also, many cars now have carbon fiber roof skins and in some cases A-pillars, so the entire top of the car is carbon fiber. In the case of the Mazda Miata or Honda S2000 cf hardtops and tonneau covers are available.

Carbon Fiber Hatch

A carbon fiber hatch is a little more complicated to make, not only are they larger but you have much more difficult bends and twists to layup carbon fiber. Another benefit of a carbon fiber hatch is that you will now have a good opportunity / excuse to install lexan light weight glass. Installing a light weight plastic can really cut down on weight. Glass windows on cars use a tremendous amount of weight, check out lexan or speed glass for a good replacement piece. Keep in mind they are more susceptible to fogging and may not be street legal. Lexan alone can save up to 13lbs, combined with a carbon fiber hatch you could have a weight savings of up to 30lbs, and maybe even more if it's a large hatch like the 3000gt.
